"I see us winning," Sanders stated emphatically Saturday. "I’m not looking that far down the line." He emphasized the focus on individual growth and team success over crowning an immediate starter. 

"I'm looking to have great practices by these two young men, and the cream of the crop is gonna rise," he explained.  “So it’s not an urgency that we got to name this and name that. Both these guys can play."

While Sanders didn't explicitly rule out both quarterbacks seeing playing time, his focus on finding "the best position" suggests a singular starter will emerge. He also highlighted the valuable contributions of veteran Ryan Staub, who brings experience and stability to the room. 

**High Praise for Two Rising Stars**

Sanders isn't alone in his confidence. Offensive Coordinator Pat Shurmur echoed the sentiment, asserting that both Salter and Lewis "could be our very best players." This bold statement reflects the high expectations Colorado has for its quarterback position moving forward.

"We as coaches owe it to our fans, our team and everybody out there to play the very best players," Shurmur stated Friday.  “In reality, in terms of the quarterback, both guys could be our very best players." 


The final decision will ultimately rest with Coach Prime, who is carefully evaluating both quarterbacks behind closed doors. The competition continues, promising a captivating storyline as Colorado prepares for the upcoming season.

Colorado Buffaloes head coach Deion Sanders has returned to the sidelines after undergoing surgery for bladder cancer earlier this year. The 57-year-old revealed his diagnosis and successful treatment during a press conference on Monday, emphasizing that he is now cancer-free. 

Sanders credits his medical team for catching the disease early, attributing his positive prognosis to their swift action. "I have never questioned God," Sanders shared with Michael Irvin. "I can’t ask, ‘Why me?’ when He’s blessed me with so much."  He continued, explaining that this experience has only deepened his faith and driven him to understand God's plan.

Despite the challenges of recovery, including significant lifestyle changes since having his bladder removed, Sanders embraces the journey ahead.  He urges others to prioritize routine health screenings, revealing his cancer was discovered during a vascular scan meant to monitor blood clots.

The news of Sanders' battle came as a shock to many in the football world, including former teammate Brett Favre. “It totally shocked me,” said Favre, who played alongside Sanders for a season with the Atlanta Falcons. "Thank God they found it and it was a successful surgery. I’m just thankful that the prognosis looks good.”

Favre, who recently received his own diagnosis of Parkinson's disease, praised Sanders' resilience, recalling his former teammate's unwavering dedication to practice.  "I’m not surprised he’s digging his heels in and going to keep coaching,” Favre said. “Not that he needs my advice, but just keep doing what you’re doing. You’re inspiring so many people. Just keep it rolling.”

Back on the sidelines in Boulder, Sanders called it "unbelievable" to be surrounded by his players again. Drones' journey has been shaped by rigorous training alongside his cousin, Cam Ward (now the No. 1 overall pick in the NFL Draft), and former Colorado star Shedeur Sanders (recently selected No. 144 overall in the NFL Draft). Their intense workouts, which even included a Fourth of July celebration with football drills followed by fireworks from a Miami yacht, have forged Drones’ resilience.

While Sanders has received media attention for his draft position, Drones stands as his defender: “A lot of people got their own opinions about Shedeur and they don’t really know him,” he said. “He doesn’t care what people say. He’s going to go out there and play football.”

Drones' commitment extends beyond high-profile training sessions.  He has also diligently worked with renowned quarterback coach Darrell Colbert since high school, recently honing his skills in Turks and Caicos. 

With a laser focus on success, Drones is ready to lead Virginia Tech into the 2025 season, starting with a crucial matchup against South Carolina in Atlanta on August 31st (ESPN, 3 p.m. ET).
